Day's Narrative: Last night we looked at the distance between Baton Rouge and Natchez. It was about 110 miles -- much more than any of us want to ride. We decided 60 miles was all we really wanted to do so we asked Connie to drive us to Torras, LA, about 65 miles from Natchez, where we got on LA 15. This road runs along and on the Mississippi levee all the way to Natchez. There was no traffic on LA 15. There were also no stores until 45 miles down the road. This we fortunately discovered before we left. At Torras, we bought sandwiches to take with us. There was a tailwind and it was easy riding on flat land. We stopped and had our sandwich lunches on the top of the levee. Later while riding along, Sgt. Kenneth Hedrick from the LA Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (photo) stopped. He looked at us, and said to Barbara (who trains with weights) and said, "You've got more muscles that either of these other two guys. Do you lift weights?" "Yes," Barbara replied with a smile. We talked for a while about some of the birds we had seen, and some more about where we were bicycling from and to. Then we went back to riding as Sgt. Hedrick drove off. The last stop and only store on the road was at Deer Park (photo), where we ate again and rested before the last 20 miles to Natchez. The bridge over the Mississippi at Natchez is reasonably new and has a wide shoulder where one can ride. We got to the motel about 4:30. Connie, who had already had a nap, was unloading the van. Tomorrow we will lay over in Natchez, do some sightseeing, eat some barbecue, and rest. © Ray & Connie Poore, 1998
