The Danielson's mailbox on SR 9.

The Dairy Queen in Wetumka where I had lunch.

Ernie Lee's mailbox.

Cee Dee's Country Store on SR 9.

The Mission Acres Total station where I had a Coke and lots of conversation.

This bull statue stands in a field along the road. It's obviously not a Black Angus, although the testicles have been painted black.

Day's Narrative: The restaurant at the motel this morning offered guests a free sit-down breakfast of eggs and bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. That was a good deal.

The morning was cold like yesterday except there was no wind. It's been so long since I bicycled without wind I had forgotten how nice it is. The road was hilly today and the paved shoulder disappeared at Seminole, 20 miles down the road. Fortunately most of the traffic did too. So it wasn't so bad.

Connie caught up with me at 10:30 and I unloaded all of my early morning warm clothing into the van. Later, at noon I ordered a double cheeseburger with fries and Coke at the Dairy Queen (photo) in Wetumka, OK. When I picked up my order it was a single bacon cheeseburger with fries and Dr. Pepper. Oh well.

I'm convinced that the lowly hamburger has more bicycling energy ounce-for-ounce (gram-for-gram) than just about any other meal. It certainly gives me a big boost for the afternoon ride.

Later in the afternoon I stopped at the Mission Acres Total station (photo) for a Coke. As I walked in a man sitting at the table asked "Do you have a motor with that thing to help you along?" I picked up my right foot, shook my leg and answered with a grin "Only the one in here." He thought that was funny. We went on to discuss his upcoming hunting trip near Pagosa Springs, CO.

A few nights ago we watched a TV program called "Discover Oklahoma." They featured a barbecue restaurant called Wildhorse Mountain Barbecue in Sallisaw, OK. I love barbecue and have been thinking about the restaurant ever since. Since Sallisaw is only 20 miles this side of Fort Smith, Connie and I have decided to end the ride tomorrow in Sallisaw, OK so we can have barbecue for dinner.

Barbecue wins and the Arkansas state line loses.

So we have changed the ride to go North to Checotah, then East along a road parallel to Interstate 40 to Sallisaw. The weather predicts a light wind from the Southwest, a tailwind.
