Day's Narrative: There was a Happy Chef restaurant next to the motel, so I ate my usual breakfast there. As I was leaving town there was another one of those great sunrises (Photo 1). This was a day for riding. I stopped at the small town of Iroquois for a snack and no one particularly wanted to chat. However some men were discussing the Clinton affair and I overheard one say with a smile, "I've heard least 50% of the people think Ken Star is the cause of this whole thing. I don't believe the people of South Dakota think that." I sat and drank my Coke in silence. I stopped again about 35 miles down the road at De Smet and no one wanted to chat there either. Connie caught up with me just before noon outside of Arlington, so we had burgers for lunch in Arlington. Again no conversations with the people in the store, in spite of my leading remarks about the weather (it was hot and humid today). I stopped in Volga just outside of Brookings, and again was unable to stir up a conversation. It was 2:30 when I rode up to the motel. The weather was so humid I was soaked with sweat and tired from the 92F (34C) degree heat. Tonight we ate in downtown Brookings at Casper's Restaurant -- an excellent meal in a delightful atmosphere. Tomorrow we will ride the tandem out to the Minnesota state line, which will "officially" end the ride across South Dakota. © Ray & Connie Poore, 1998
