Spring Sprung & Woggs.

Ahoy again. Last week I went to that Mark Mothersbaugh show at Templeball, quite a good time. Weirdo art, I loved it. My lightbox is in the Carroboro Arts Center till the end of the month.

Happy Birthday Rachel! Congrats.

Radio went well last week on the Who's Got The Cuckoo, garage rock show. Jenny Martinez wrote in, great to hear from her. Sports Guys were no-show so I did 2.5 hours of Garage. Whew.

Woggles recorded here last week, I took cookies to them that Lynne had made, they loved every crumb. Record sounds good too, from the 1.2 songs I heard on the mix.

Going for a boyscout bike trip with Austin this weekend, leaving tonight. Virginia Creeper Trail, looks good but it might be cold.

I put up some posts about Sleazefest 2000 that I unearthed right here on this computermachine, check it out on my other blog.

Cheers! --Robby

Week of Busy Bodies & Strange Nonsense.

Howdy. What a busy week. Even last weekend was busy. All's going well with Lynne's forced exile in stalag biovarg, working by leaps and bounds. She's happier than she's been in a while, so that's good.

Bandelirium, Chapel Hill's local music trivia gameshow, shot the fifth and sixth episodes on Monday night. It's going well! I did the logo design for it. The show is really great actually, and quite funny. I'll post more about it later. Next shoot is on Monday night, 21 March 2005 at the Cave.

Things starting to grow outside and I'm forced to venture out and kill some of it with my bare hands. Might even try to plant some mandrake seeds my Mother gave me. Will they take? Think they won't? Betony too. All the bulbs have sprung from the warm ground. They cycle of life continues.

Radio. Went well on Sunday, with Uncle Bob helping me dj.. in fact, choosing over half the songs. He's a great resource. I asked him about his first-ever blues concert... it was the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, when he saw Muddy Waters, Rev. Gary Davis, etc.! Pretty amazing. We talked about that for a while until my Mother wrote in to the chat line, and mentioned that she was there too! And, get this... she was pregnant with me! So I guess I was there too. Great having Uncle Bob up there, and really great to have him talk about shows he's seen. He's been an amazing influence on my life.

TUNE IN this Sunday night when I have the Woggles on from 9-10pm eastern, on the Who's Got The Cuckoo garage rock show. They are recording in the area and I hope they can make it. Either way, tune in, it'll be fun.

Art show tonight. Carrboro Arts Center, with the lightbox thing that I mentioned on my last post. The show will be up for the rest of the month, so check it out if you got the time. 'Cross the street is the Mark Mothersbaugh show (DEVO frontman) at Templeball. After that I was going to go home and set a fire in my cauldron that my brother Jonathan gave me, but it's raining... so again I've got a night of sitting alone in the basement listening to records.

CD of the Week.
Dressy Bessy by Dressy Bessy. More of that great Elephant-6ish 60s powerpop, really bubblegum and just the kind of thing to keep me out of winter's doldrums. They're from Denver, check out their website. Also have been listening to a German garage group called the Satelliters, pretty good stuff, the recording is great, and a few really great fuzz songs, some psych. Even a Rickenbacker heard on that record! Fun. Oh yeah, and the Zombies' Oddessy and Oracle, from Enrique. golly.

Plans for next weekend are go on a bikeride weekender with my cousin Austin in Virginia and hurl ourselves down a rocky slope with his boyscout troops. Camping and baked beans are also involved. Marshmallows? Hope so. Next week after that I go to Atlanta to hang out with my good friend Ash. Plans are to drink a lot, play Halo2 on his xbox, speak German with a Swedish accent, and sing songs of the French revolution. Also going to see my darlings Isabelle and Ian, Jonathan and Stacy too.

Hooray UNC! Victory at last. Sunday we beat Duke, today Florida State. Tomorrow? The WORLD.

Stalag Biovarg & Report

Hallo. News from the Lynne n' Robby front; Lynne's been hidden from public view for the past few months now, a somewhat self-imprisonment that involves her working on her PhD. I'm doing my darnedest to keep annoyances and interruptions to a minimum, hence Stalag Biovarg. She's doing well, I think--the articles are being read, typing is heard on the computer, and minimal squeaks and scrapes are heard coming from her office.

Radio. I've got my very own supercool show now, Friday's from 7-9 am eastern; www.wxdu.org. Check it out. Playlist show mostly but it's nice to have a better shift. Still subbing the Blues show (lookout on Sunday 6 March, noon-till 3 pm eastern). Garage show on 13 March 2005, 9-10 pm eastern. Whee!

Listening to a whole bunch of stuff these days: Venetian Snares, crazy electronica mishmash "drill n' bass" as my friend Chris puts it. Songs about My Cats I just got at CD Alley. Enrique's newest mix (06 Jan 05 La Virgen) came in the mail to much rejoicing a few weeks ago and I can't get enough. Great mix of Decemberists, Dolorean, Cat Power, Nick Drake & Others. I have never known mixes to be as good as Enrique's. Very interested in Castanets and Dressy Bessy from other mixes. ¡ Muchas Gracias, Enriqué! Also have been listening to much Ant Farmers and Carl Petersen's Clampett Report. Carl's one of my favorite songwriters, never ceases to amaze me.

Artwork is progressing by leaps and bounds. I took this 8-week Mixed Media class through the Carrboro Arts Center, didn't know quite what to expect. I brought in all kinds of weird stuff, pieces of gel, paper, tape, pencils, paint... two canvas bags stuffed with anything I could find from my studio. Basically with the help of Ryan (the instructor) and the rest of the class, I'm synthesizing much of what I've done in my life into somewhat new art: light, art, painting, design... I'm doing gel and transparency collages on a light box, along with some ink washes (that look much like the psych light show I used to do for the Strawberry Zots). Mighty cool. I haven't been this excited about my art in a long while. Here's the photo:

CD of the Week: Slow Wonder by A.C. Newman. Can't get enough of it. Fantastic pop album, good from start to finish, go get it now if you like New Pornographers.

It's getting warmer now, hope to hit the roads with my good friend Dan Woggle for some bike ridin'!
